Train derailment in Commerce City, no injuries

At approximately 1:40 p.m. today, a northbound Union Pacific train derailed near E. 96th Avenue. Three box cars near the end of the train derailed and are overturned on the ground; there are several tankers behind the box cars which have started to lean over. The tankers are empty. There are no injuries and this is not a public safety hazard.

Interstate 76 at E. 96th Avenue is closed to prevent eastbound traffic (except for business traffic) and E. 96th Avenue at Yosemite Street is closed for westbound traffic. Drivers are encouraged to avoid these areas and follow detours.

At this time, the cause for the derailment is unknown. Union Pacific and the National Transportation Safety Board are en route to assess the situation. The incident is expected to be cleaned up within 4-6 hours.
