VOTER-APPROVED CAPITAL PROGRAM WILL CONSTRUCT NEW RECREATION CENTER, EXPAND EXISTING FACILITY
Commerce City is hosting four public meetings in August to obtain community feedback about programming ideas for the new recreation facility and expansion of the existing center approved by voters in 2013.
Each of the four meetings will present the same information, so residents can select the time that works best for them to attend:Aug. 5, 6-7:30 p.m., Commerce City Recreation Center, Multi-purpose Rooms A and B, 6060 Parkway Dr., Commerce City, CO 80022Aug. 6, 6-7:30 p.m., Commerce City Recreation Center, Multi-purpose Rooms A and B, 6060 Parkway Dr., Commerce City, CO 80022Aug. 12, 7:30-9 p.m., Belle Creek Family Center YMCA, 10693 Belle Creek Blvd., Henderson, CO 80640Aug. 13, 5:30-7 p.m., Belle Creek Family Center YMCA, 10693 Belle Creek Blvd., Henderson, CO 80640 Staff is also reaching out to key recreation users such as youth, older adults/senior citizens, youth sports associations and Spanish-speakers to further gauge opinions. All public input will be used to plan the design of both facilities, with construction anticipated in 2017.
Community input over a two-year period identified initial facility components and budget estimates used to develop the ballot measure approved by voters in 2013. Located near 112th Avenue and Chambers Road, the new recreation center could include an indoor pool, gymnasium, dance/aerobics studio, gymnastics and site infrastructure. The existing recreation center at 6060 E. Parkway Drive would see new additions such as a therapy pool, dance/aerobics studio and family locker rooms.
Resident feedback will help determine if these previously identified building programs ideas are still the best approach to meet community needs going into the future as well as help prioritize improvements. Both projects are expected to be completed by 2018.
The new recreation center and additions to the existing facility are two of five projects funded by a 1-percent sales and use tax increase approved by voters in 2013 to build, operate and maintain five projects over the next five years. All of the projects are in an active phase of design and construction, including:· Three new neighborhood parks (Fronterra, Turnberry and Villages at Buffalo Run East)· Widening of Tower Road from 80th to 103rd avenues· New recreation center· Additions to existing recreation center· New outdoor pool at Pioneer Park (completed July 2015)
