Commerce City’s new recruitment program pays for police academy

Do you have a desire to serve others? Do you possess compassion, integrity and honesty? Join the Commerce City Police Department, which is seeking Coloradans who desire a career in law enforcement and are ready to be part of a team that meets the public safety needs of a diverse community. Bilingual individuals are strongly encouraged to consider this unique opportunity.

“This successful non-traditional strategy enables our police department to continue building successful community partnerships, hire qualified candidates and build an organization that better reflects the community we serve,” said Deputy Chief of Police Lowell Richardson. “Our spring recruitment, which focused exclusively on city residents, employees and volunteers, resulted in 175 applications and the hiring of three new recruits who are currently in the academy.”

The Commerce City Police Department is seeking to hire new police officers from the local community and state of Colorado. The city will sponsor up to five successful applicants to attend the Adams County Sheriff’s Office Police Academy. During the 20-week training, recruits will receive an hourly pay rate of $18. The city will also pay for tuition and equipment costs associated with the police academy. Qualified recruits must successfully complete the academy, pass state certification and the department’s field training program to join the department as an officer.

Eligible individuals must:
• Be at least 21 years of age
• Be a Colorado resident
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Be able to perform all physical demands of the job as stipulated in the job description
• Be a United States citizen OR possess proper I-9 documentation
• Be able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
• Not have applied for a police officer position with the police department within the last 12 months
• Commit to three years of service by signing an agreement with the city

Learn more about the police department and available opportunities at an information session from 6 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at the Commerce City Civic Center, 7887 E. 60th Ave. Light refreshments will be provided. Those who cannot attend the meeting can stream the session live online at c3gov.com/video.

There are up to five positions available during this recruitment and Commerce City offers competitive salaries and benefits. For example, police officers that are deemed proficient in all aspects of the job currently earn $25.68 - $36.89 per hour. Applicants must visit c3gov.com/jobs to apply online by August 24, 2015. Successful candidates will commit to the department’s core values: trust, respect, excellence, leadership, and restraint, and have demonstrated these characteristics.
