Dinger, Edson the Eagle and Lightning joined Commerce City to officially begin construction on the new Villages at Buffalo Run East Neighborhood Park. Elected officials teed up the celebration and swung for the fences to get another voter-approved project underway.
“The groundbreaking is not only a celebration of a long-planned neighborhood park,” said Mayor Sean Ford. “It’s a celebration of the final park under construction in the $137 million capital improvement program approved by voters in 2013.”
The park is just one of five projects funded by a 1-percent sales and use tax increase approved by voters in 2013 to build, operate and maintain five projects over the next five years. The city committed to completing these first five projects by Jan. 1, 2019; each below project is in an active phase of design, construction or completion:• Three new neighborhood parks • Fronterra (complete)• Turnberry • Villages at Buffalo Run East• Widening of Tower Road from 80th to 103rd avenues• New recreation center at Second Creek• New additions to existing recreation center• New outdoor pool at Pioneer Park (complete)
The community selected a Rocky Mountain-inspired theme for the park, which is scheduled to open this summer. One of three new neighborhood parks, the 9-acre site located at 11698 Chambers Road will include a multi-use hard court, playground, field and courts, picnic shelters, restrooms and a baseball field.
