Commerce City issues first retail marijuana license

City Clerk Laura Bauer issues the first marijuana license to Melissa Bradley, Lifestyle Foods, Inc.

Commerce City issued its first marijuana license this week, following the repeal of the city’s temporary ban on retail marijuana businesses in 2015. Lifestyle Foods, Inc. received a retail marijuana products manufacturer’s license, after successfully completing the seven-step licensing process.

The city’s marijuana licensing team conducted 28 pre-application meetings since the repeal, resulting in 13 applications submitted. Four public hearings have been held, resulting in two approvals, one denial and one continuance. An additional three public hearings are scheduled April 22 to hear the continuance and issue a decision on two new applications.

There is no cap on the number of marijuana businesses allowed, but Commerce City has identified specific areas where marijuana operations can exist. In addition to repealing the moratorium, the city adopted a new licensing program for both medical and retail marijuana businesses and amended its land development, building, and fire codes to support safe and thoughtful marijuana regulation. To operate legally, marijuana businesses will need to follow the city’s regulations as well as those of the state. More information is available at c3gov.com/marijuana.
