Emergency preparedness training free for public

The Commerce City Office of Emergency Management is offering hands-on training for the public to learn disaster preparedness and response skills. The Community Emergency Response Team Training (CERT) covers multiple subjects including fire safety and utility controls; searching building and rescue operations; disaster/emergency preparedness; and disaster medical/triage operations.

“These basic disaster and organization skills will provide the everyday person information to be more prepared in the event of an emergency,” said Kirk Dominic, Commerce City’s emergency manager. “Emergencies can occur when you least expect them and this course prepares people to help themselves, their friends and families if an emergencies situation arises. Here in Commerce City, we know tornadoes, hail storms, lighting, flooding, power outages and severe winter weather can all become emergency situations within seconds.”

The training is divided over two days, starting Thursday, Nov. 10 from 6-9 p.m., which includes a tour Commerce City’s Emergency Operations Center, and Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Thirty seats are open for this introductory training and participants will receive a certificate of completion. To reserve a spot, email Kirk Dominic, at kdominic@c3gov.com, by Thursday, Nov. 3. Please provide your name, mailing address, email address, phone number and specify if you are a minor.

The training is free and open to the public. Participants must be 16 years old to attend. Parents must sign a Hold Harmless/Permission Request for 16 and 17 year olds attending the training. For more information, visit Commerce City’s CERT Program at www.c3gov.com/CERTdoc. For questions or concerns, call Kirk Dominic at 303-289-3792.

Both sessions are at Commerce City Police Department’s briefing room in the Civic Center building located at 7887 E. 60th Avenue.
