Commerce City breaks ground on Highway 2 widening project

Commerce City broke ground today on the Highway 2 widening project near E. 88th Avenue and Highway 2. The project will widen Highway 2 from two to four lanes between E. 72nd Avenue and I-76.

The project is designed to increase vehicle capacity and improve safety with elements including a raised and landscaped median, dedicated bicycle lanes, LED street lighting, in-pavement lighting/reflectors, multi-use trail, landscape improvements and improved drainage.

“The Highway 2 widening project represent jobs, progress, and the future of Commerce City.” said Mayor Pro Tem Rene Bullock. “The new road will support our growing community and encourage other modes of transportation, such as biking, for many years to come.”

Construction is expected to be complete in 2018 (weather dependent). The total project budget is $27 million for the widening of Highway 2 between E. 72nd Avenue and I-76. Traffic flow will continue during the project with lane closures. The designer is HDR, Inc. and the construction manager and general contractor is Flatiron Constructors, Inc. Funding for the project was made available through a Colorado Department of Transportation grant and Commerce City funds. Flatiron Construction plans to hire 20-30 craft employees to work on the project and encourages residents to apply at their office, 4605 Paris St., Denver 80239.

To learn more about the widening project, residents are encourage to attend a public meeting on November 2 at Lester Arnold High School from 5 to 7 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the project team members, view the project schedule and ask any further questions.
