Global Steel Company Intsel Expands Operations in Commerce City

92 jobs, 234,000-Sq. Ft. Facility Anchors Irondale Development

The city’s Irondale neighborhood will see some long-awaited development with the new Intsel Steel expansion near E. 86th Avenue and Ulster Street off Highway 2. The company recently purchased 55 acres and plans to install a BNSF rail spur and construct a 234,000-square-foot building to expand its operations.

“The property in Commerce City allows us to consolidate our Denver and Commerce City operations and grow the business,” said Rod Fisher, general manager from Intsel. “We provide steel for projects all over the world and access to the BNSF railway will further allow us to support the global market.”

Intsel sells nearly 700,000 tons of steel annually for bridges, stadiums, barges and large buildings throughout North, South, and Central Americas. The new facility will provide 92 jobs and $14.5 million in capital investment and will be a catalyst for future development in the area, including potential rail access for other companies.

“Intsel creates a key resource for building some of the world’s most important structures, including steel in some of the city’s infrastructure, and we are glad they are expanding in the city,” said Mayor Sean Ford. “The property they purchased in Irondale has sat empty for many years and the capital investment and jobs they bring are important for future growth in that area.”

On February 1, city council approved an incentive package, to help attract Intsel to the city, which included rebates of paid sales and use taxes as well as building permit and plan check fees. The new Intsel facility also is within an enterprise zone, which provides state income tax credits to qualifying companies making new investments.

The parent company, Houston-based Triple-S Steel Holdings, (www.sss-steel.com) was founded in 1960. The Commerce City operations broke ground October 25 and will be a subsidiary called Intsel Steel West. Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2017.
