City Crews Prepared to Take on Winter Weather

Two new snowplow trucks at the ready
New Snow Plows, Updated Storm Response Plan in Place

With the season’s first major blast of winter weather expected to hit the Front Range, Commerce City is prepared to handle snow removal duties to keep streets maintained both this week and throughout the coming winter.

“We have been preparing for snow season since this summer by purchasing two new plow trucks and updating our integrated snow response plan,” said Maria D’Andrea, director of public works. “The snow plan includes on-call and snow support procedures that ensure the city is ready to clear streets whenever snow starts to fly.”

The two new trucks bring the city fleet to 11 plows, including the city’s first “wing plow,” which is capable of plowing two lanes at once thanks to a second blade mounted on the side. The new plows are marked with high-visibility reflective graphics and modern safety features such as back-up cameras and hands-free communications equipment for drivers.

The snow removal plan prioritizes city streets on four levels based on traffic volume and importance to first responders. Major arterials such as Quebec Parkway and E. 104th Avenue are cleared first, followed by collector streets that complete the city transportation network and allow access to schools. Residential streets are plowed only when excessive snow makes them effectively impassable. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) handles snow removal on major highways such as U.S. 85 and Interstates 76 and 270.
