The city is seeking nominations for the 2024 Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal. The city welcomes nominations of military veterans young and old from any branch of the armed forces, as well as recognition of Gold Star Families to posthumously honor service members who died while serving in a time of conflict.
Nominations must be received by Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Nominations received after this date will not be considered.
The 2024 Memorial Day Parade takes place on Monday, May 27, with a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park (6015 Forest Dr.) taking place before the parade.
Selection Criteria
The Memorial Day Parade Committee includes members of City Council, the Veterans Commission, and city staff from various departments. The committee reviews all received nominations and makes the final selection in early April, at which time the grand marshal will be notified. The parade committee typically selects one grand marshal each year for the parade, but could choose multiple individuals for the honor.
The committee evaluates nominees on the following criteria:
- Must be a veteran or active-duty member of the military (proof of discharge required) or a Gold Star Family with an immediate family member who has fallen while serving in a time of conflict
- Must be a current or former resident of Commerce City
- Selected on the basis of achievements during their military service and/or contributions to the Commerce City community
- Must be willing and physically able to act as grand marshal, which includes attending the Memorial Day Ceremony and riding in the Parade on Monday, May 27, 2024
The grand marshal will be recognized at a ceremony before the parade at Veterans Memorial Park.
The grand marshal appears at the front of the parade and is acknowledged by parade announcers. After completing the parade route, the grand marshal is escorted to the reviewing stand to watch the remainder of the parade.
