Employee Benefits

City of Commerce City employee salaries are competitive and the benefits are exceptional. We recognize the value of each and every employee and are committed to offering tools and benefits which help foster professional development and success. The city offers full-time employees an extensive benefits package that includes:

Health, Life and Disability Insurance

Health Insurance

Employees can select United HealthCare. Employees are eligible the first of the month following date of hire for insurance benefits. Dental insurance is provided by Delta Dental of Colorado while vision insurance is offered through VSP at a minimal cost.

Life Insurance

The city pays the full premium for term life insurance in the amount of two times the employee’s annual salary (up to $200,000 per employee). Spouses and dependent children are provided a $2,000 life insurance benefit. Employees have the option to purchase additional supplemental and portable coverage for themselves, their spouses and their dependents.

Long-Term Care Insurance

In conjunction with retirement planning, this voluntary, portable insurance pays for home health care, assisted living facilities, nursing home, hospice, adult day care and more.

Short and Long-Term Disability

Employees who cannot work due to a non-work-related illness or injury may receive short-term disability pay at 100 percent of regular wages for up to 90 days and long-term disability insurance to cover 60 percent of wages through the remaining period of disability.

Retirement

Deferred Compensation 401(a) Plan and 457 Plan

The city contributes 6 percent to each non-FOP full-time employee's 401(a) Plan, and employee contributes a mandatory 6 percent of their salary to the same plan. An optional 457 Plan is also available for full-time and part-time employees. This allows employees to invest additional tax deferred dollars into a retirement saving plan. Loan options are also available. General employee retirement contributions are fully vested after three years of employment. This means that upon completion of each year with the city, employees will have ownership of 33% of the employer contributions. Employees are always entitled to their own contributions made to the 401A retirement plan.

Flexible Spending (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

This is an excellent option for full-time employees interested in saving money on medical/health and dependent care expenses. This plan allows employees to allocate pre-tax money toward items such as prescriptions or child care expenses and be reimbursed for expenses.

Leave

Full-time new hires will receive a General Leave bank of 48 hours upon hire. The leave amount for the year is the same, but allows employees to join the city with leave available to use. Full-time employees receive ample general leave time - from 19 days (152 hours) up to 34 days (272 hours) based on years of service. General leave acts as a bank of hours that can be used for vacation, sick time and personal leave. Full-time employees receive 11 paid holidays (88 hours) annually. Variable-hour, and part-time employees accrue paid sick leave at the rate of one hour per thirty hours worked.

Compensatory Time

Non-exempt full-time and part-time employees may earn compensatory time in lieu of paid overtime.

Full-time and part-time employees who cannot work due to an on-the-job injury may be eligible for 100 percent worker’s compensation.
