Pavement Maintenance and Management

When it comes to maintaining roads, Commerce City is committed to making the right repair on the right road at the right time. That’s why the city uses a comprehensive pavement maintenance and management plan that follows a sensible schedule for taking care of roadways.

Snow Removal

Commerce City uses 11 plow trucks to remove snow from nearly 280 lane miles of roadway within the city. The city’s snow response plan prioritizes city streets on four levels based on traffic volume and importance to emergency personnel. The plan classifies storms into three categories based on their severity to help determine the city’s approach to plowing.

Street Sweeping

The city’s street sweeping program typically begins in late March or early April and continues through November (schedules are subject to change due to weather or mechanical issues). Most residential streets in the city are swept three times annually. Streets in commercial/industrial areas and streets without improved drainage (no curb and gutter) are typically swept twice per year.

Weed Management and Mowing

To make sure city rights-of-way (such as medians and roadsides) and open space areas are maintained in a manner that meets city ordinances, the city has implemented a comprehensive weed management plan. The program involves scheduled mowing of public corridors and spraying harmful weed species in order to improve the appearance of these areas and maintain sight lines for motorists and pedestrians.

Public Works oversees weed mowing along city roadways and in undeveloped open spaces (including the edges of subdivisions) and works with Adams County to identify and spray noxious weeds on city-owned property. When possible, the city landscapes medians and other open areas with native grasses that do not require mowing and drought-resistant plants that use less water.
