On the evening of Saturday, Jan. 13, the Suncor refinery self-reported a release of sulfur dioxide in exceedance of the allowances of its operating permit. According to the reporting form submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the release of more than 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide occurred “due to issues associated with sub-zero temperatures,” but did not include any more information about the issues or how long the release lasted. Suncor reported Saturday evening that they were taking actions including “monitoring emissions” and “stabilizing process units”.
As of Sunday afternoon, CDPHE officials reported to city staff that air monitors were not detecting elevated levels of sulfur dioxide in the area around the refinery. The city has not received any additional information from Suncor or CDPHE at this time.
