Excessive Weed Growth

Residents are required to maintain their lawn mow their lawn on a regular basis. Weeds and grass should be cut to eight inches or less on residential properties in the city. Property owners are also required to maintain the area between their property line and the street  

Overhanging Trees and Bushes: Street signs, sidewalks and streets must be kept free of obstructions such as trees and bushes. 

Standards for property maintenance

  • Less than one acre: Cut weeds and grass to a height of eight (8) inches or less from the property line to the edge of the street. In other words, anywhere on or within the adjacent public right-of-way.
  • Greater than one acre: Weeds and grass should not exceed 16 inches. A uniform cut is now required for undeveloped properties one acre or larger that are not zoned for agricultural use. Two or more contiguous lots, tracts, or parcels are considered a single property for this purpose.

What to do when you receive a Notice of Violation

This is a legal notice that alerts property owners of excessive weed/grass growth. You have seven (7) days to bring your property into compliance or to contact us to inquire about a compliance extension in order to avoid a fine.

  • Penalties for Non-Compliance. Minimum penalty for the first violation *$99 → $500
  •  For each successive violation of the same code provision within any 12-month period *$999 → $2,650
    *Fines are assessed based on acreage size

What is the city doing? 

MyC3 Tool Trailer Program

Tool Trailer program to provide residents with complimentary access to yard and gardening tools. This program is part of the recent MyC3 initiative to support residents and businesses in maintaining their properties and keeping Commerce City looking beautiful. 

The Tool Trailer is available May through October and is free to residents. Delivery, pickup and return of tools are available Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Reservation requests can be placed at c3gov.com/MyC3
