Home Repair Program

Home repairs can be pricey. The good news is income-qualified Commerce City residents may be eligible for one or more Home Repair Programs (HRPs), as part of the city’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Qualified residents may be able to get assistance with minor home repairs, weatherization improvements, or exterior painting.

Home Rehabilitation Loans

Need help improving your home? The Housing Authority provides low-interest loans to qualifying homeowners for home repair and improvement projects such as electrical rewiring and plumbing, furnace and roof repair.

Senior Property Tax Assistance

Tax Credit for the Elderly and Disabled

This program provides you an income tax credit on your federal tax return that you file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can get help from this program if you are 65 years of age or older, have limited income and receive taxable income. You can also apply if you are under the age of 65, disabled and retired on taxable disability income.

Property Tax Deferral Program for Seniors

This program provides you a rebate on the property tax, rent and heat expense you pay if you meet the programs requirements. You may get help from this program if you are 65 years of age or older or you have a disability. You may also get help if you are 58 years of age or older and are a widow.

Commerce City Senior Property Tax Refund

Senior citizens 62 years of age and older are eligible for a $36 yearly refund of the property taxes paid to the City of Commerce City. If more than $36 was paid to Commerce City for the previous year, 100 percent of the paid amount may be refunded. Senior citizen renters may apply for a $30 refund.

Home Related Services Discounts (Phone/Internet)

  • Lifeline can help you get monthly discounts on your basic wireless or home telephone service. The discounts can include a lower phone bill or free wireless minutes. You may get help from this program if you have limited income or you are currently enrolled in certain public benefits programs.
  • FCC Emergency Broadband Benefit - This program can help make home internet more affordable during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you qualify will receive up to $50 or $75 toward monthly broadband services. You can also receive a one-time credit to help buy a device like a computer or tablet.

  • HUD Public Housing Program - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers federal aid to local Housing Agencies (HAs). If you meet the program guidelines, you pay no more than 30% of your adjusted gross income for your rental. You can take part in this program if you are 50 years of age or older, have a disability, and/or have limited income.
  • Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) Program - This program helps you get decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private rental market. Section 8 pays a portion of your monthly rent by paying your landlord directly the difference between the full rent amount (or the payment standard established by the agency) and no more than 30% of your adjusted gross income. You can take part in this program if you are 62 years of age or older, have a disability, and/or have limited income.
  • Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) - This program provides financial help to households that are unable to pay rent or utilities, or who have fallen behind in payment for rent, utilities (electricity, water, sewer, etc.) home energy costs, and other expenses related to housing. For people who qualify, the program provides temporary help or assistance in these areas to help maintain housing stability.
  • Weatherization Assistance Program - This program helps you conserve energy and lower your energy bills by providing free home energy repairs and services. You may get help with insulation of doors, windows, floors, walls, ducts, and water heaters, as well as help modifying your furnace and other heating devices to help them work better. To get help from this program, you must have limited income.
  • Property Tax/Rent/Heat Rebate - This program provides you a rebate on the property tax, rent and heat expense you pay if you meet the programs requirements. You may get help from this program if you are 65 years of age or older or you have a disability. You may also get help if you are 58 years of age or older and are a widow.
  • Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) - This program helps you with the cost of heating your home by giving you a credit. To get help from this program, you must own or rent the home where you live. The program takes into account your household income and your heating costs.
